SMM Hamburg 2026: Security, decarbonization, and energy efficiency

SMM2026 Innovation in maritime industry

At the beginning of September, WATTALPS attended SMM Hamburg 2026, one of the world’s leading events for the maritime industry. Bringing together shipowners, operators, technology providers, and industry experts from around the globe, SMM is a key platform for sharing insights, building partnerships, and discussing the future of maritime innovation.

Among the key takeaways from this year’s event were the growing importance of security across the maritime sector, while decarbonization and energy efficiency remain top priorities. The post-event article [1] written by SMM stresses that industry leaders highlighted the need to accelerate the deployment of available technologies capable of delivering tangible operational and environmental value.

Security – decarbonization – energy efficiency, this message strongly resonates with WATTALPS’ mission.

Our immersion-cooled batteries have been designed specifically to address the challenges of heavy-duty applications where safety, reliability, and performance are non-negotiable. By immersing battery cells and busbars directly in a dielectric fluid, WATTALPS batteries provide exceptional thermal management, delivering outstanding power (up to 8C), improving operational safety, and reducing vessel integration cost (no battery room chiller, no air treatment…).

WATTALPS battery systems have obtained Bureau Veritas Marine type approval, providing independent validation that the technology meets the stringent safety and reliability requirements of the maritime industry.

Sharing our vision at the ‘Innovation in Maritime Industry’ side event

On September 1, WATTALPS participated in the Innovation in Maritime Industry side event, where our Business Development Director, Chris Oudin, presented a talk titled “Battery Packs: Immersion Cooling for Maritime Applications”

The presentation showed how WATTALPS immersion cooling enables a new generation of electrified vessels by delivering:

  • Enhanced safety, eliminating heavy and big exhaust pipes
  • Most efficient cooling, eliminating costly and heavy air treatment and chilling systems
  • High continuous power output (up to 8C), enabling to downsize the battery for the same function
  • Fast charging capabilities (10% – 80% in less than 15 minutes)
  • Longer battery lifetime (up to 4 times)
  • Reliable operation in demanding marine environments

Chris highlighted what makes WATTALPS unique and explained the applications for which immersion-cooled batteries provide the greatest value. Two concrete use cases demonstrated the benefits of WATTALPS technology in maritime applications.

SMM 2026 confirmed a trend that WATTALPS has observed across all heavy-duty sectors: electrification must go hand in hand with safety, reliability and operational performance. As vessel operators accelerate their decarbonization roadmaps, immersion-cooled batteries offer a mature and proven solution capable of meeting the most demanding marine requirements.
