Temperature control is essential for Battery Performance and Life

Optimal temperature range

Batteries function best between 15°C and 30°C.

Used in highly demanding applications, batteries deliver high power which can generate a lot of heat. Besides, they often operate in extreme temperature conditions, either very hot or very cold.

  • Battery usage is limited below -20°C.
  • Charging becomes impossible or with strong impact on life at temperatures typically below 0°C or above 45°C.
  • Safety issues arise at temperatures exceeding 60°C.
  • Battery Life: Temperature extremes can drastically reduce battery life —operating at 45°C can reduces lifespan by 66%.
  • Capacity: Low temperatures significantly affect capacity, with a 60% reduction observed at -10°C.

Temperature homogeneity

The overall performance of a battery is determined by its weakest cell. To ensure safety and maximize efficiency and reliability, it is essential to keep all cells at a homogeneous, controlled temperature.

WATTALPS unrivalled temperature control

WATTALPS technology immerses all battery cells in a dielectric fluid that is non-flammable, biodegradable, and non-toxic.

This fluid, combined with its unique and patented circulation design around the cells and busbars, guarantees uniform temperature control throughout the battery pack.

WATTALPS immersion cooling technology ensures a maximum temperature spread of only 2°C in the battery.

Advantages of WATTALPS temperature control on Battery Performance & Life

WATTALPS’ cutting-edge technology offers remarkable thermal management capabilities, which enables the battery to reach unrivalled performance & life

Performance

With WATTALPS immersion cooling technology, fast charges can be performed and high power delivered with no risk of temperature increase. This is particularly of interest for hybrid applications.

By immersing even the busbars, the heat transfer coefficient is more than 10 times higher compared to other technologies. The battery remains fully functional in extreme temperatures ranging from -20°C to +60°C, with no loss of capacity.

Cycle life

With immersion cooling enabling the battery to run in optimal temperature conditions, the lifetime of the battery is drastically increased compared to any other cooling technologies.

Our experts can assess the cycle life of your batteries depending on your specific application & battery usage (ambient temperature, Depth of Discharge (DOD), Charging rate (C), State of Charge (SOC), End of Life State of health (SOH)).
