Battery Management System (BMS)
A BMS, Battery Management System, can be considered as the brain of a battery. It is a core component of your equipment, having a huge impact on its performance, reliability and safety.
WATTALPS BMS is specifically designed for highly demanding applications and is certified according to the highly functional safety standard ISO26262.
It efficiently manages all five key functions of a BMS.
What is a BMS?
Battery Management System
The BMS (Battery Management System) is the component of your equipment that controls the battery state and keeps the cell in a safe and optimal operating range. It is composed of components linked to a central control unit and has several functions:
- Safety, with the Battery Safety Management System
- Modularity and battery configuration
- Interface with the application, machine or vehicle
- Battery heating and cooling management
- Connectivity and services linked to the battery.
WATTALPS has developed its own BMS to address all these functions. The WATTALPS BMS is specifically designed for highly demanding applications and has been extensively tested for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), resistance to environment and endurance. It is also ISO26262 certified.

⊕ WATTALPS BSMS and active safety
The BMS ensures that all lithium-ion cells are in a safe operating zone, by detecting potential issues early, informing the system of any discrepancies and preventing any safety issue.
WATTALPS Battery Safety Management System ensures the active safety of our battery packs.
BMS and Modularity of battery configuration
Developing a BMS is a resource-intensive task, which is why most BMS are designed to work with various battery packs. Common configurable parameters include:
- Battery capacity
- Operational ranges (e.g., temperature, voltage, current)
- Number of modules and their electrical configurations (e.g., series or parallel connections)
- Number of input/output interfaces
- And more.
BMS and Interface with the machine
The BMS manages the interface between the battery and the application to which the battery is connected. The WATTALPS BMS is specifically designed to minimize development costs. It is adaptable for use across various machines and configurations, with parameter settings tailored to meet your application’s specific requirements.
The WATTALPS BMS includes:
- State of Charge (SOC) of the battery, and State of Health (SOH)
- Cell balancing, although the need is limited for WATTALPS batteries due to the strict selection of cells and their compliance with rigorous quality & homogeneity control. The low need for balancing is also due to WATTALPS immersion cooling technology ensuring battery performance and passive safety.
- CAN bus communication with the application (or other equivalent buses)
- Maximum current in charge and discharge sent regularly and adapted to every situation (temperature, SOC…)
- And much more.
BMS and Thermal Management
Learn more on:
⊕ Temperature control
The BMS manages the temperature of the battery so as to optimize the performance, life and productivity of the battery.
The WATTALPS BMS benefits from WATTALPS unique patented immersion cooling technology which enables temperature control at the cell level for best battery performance and life. With the full immersion of battery cells and busbars, this technology ensures a controlled and homogeneous temperature of all the cells within the battery.
Heating
Under low temperatures, heating is required to ensure performance and life. The BMS activates heating of the battery to enable charging and high performance at low temperature.
Cooling or chilling
The BMS can activate cooling of the battery to enable fast charging and high power in a hot environment, while keeping a good battery life. If the ambient temperature goes beyond 45°C, a chiller may be necessary.
BMS and Connectivity
Over the air connectivity is a powerful asset for batteries in industrial applications.
Here are some key benefits which WATTALPS BMS provides:
- Real-time monitoring for high reactivity, efficiency, and limited downtime.
- Optimization of energy usage and fleet management, increase in battery life.
- Remote BMS software updates.
- And much more.
