Battery safety certification is based on 2 pillars: passive safety with battery design and active safety with the BMS.

⊕ WATTALPS’ innovative Immersion Cooling Technology

 

WATTALPS has developed a unique battery design combined with immersion cooling technology that ensures the non-propagation of thermal runaway. This achievement is certified by Bureau Veritas for Maritime Type Approval.

A cell thermal runaway can be due to internal default inside the cell, inherent to the cell production process. It always causes venting of hot combustible gas and can be followed by a fire or explosion. Such an event can be dramatic when the thermal runaway of one cell of the pack propagates to adjacent cells, generating a global battery fire.

With WATTALPS’ innovation, the vent gas is evacuated through a dedicated circuit. The fire is stopped by the fluid surrounding each cell. The propagation of thermal runaway is prevented because the fluid absorbs the generated heat and the robust casing protects adjacent modules.

WATTALPS’ immersion cooling technology also enables the control of each cell temperature without circulating water in the battery. Circulating water in a battery can lead to a global battery fire in case of leakage. For maritime type approval, water cooled batteries have to be equipped with moisture sensors in every single battery module.

Cell qualification & immersion for best protection

All cells in our batteries are scrupulously selected from renowned suppliers, tested and qualified.

All cells are fully immersed in a fluid, ensuring protection against environmental factors such as rust, dust, water and moisture.

With all cells being already fully immersed in a dielectric fluid, there is no risk of fire in case of coolant leakage.

Robust design

WATTALPS Battery Systems have achieved the highest certifications for safety and durability.

WATTALPS batteries have successfully passed all required tests for UN38.3, ECE R10 (EMC), ECE R100 rev.5 (vibration, shocks, crash, crush…), Bureau Veritas Maritime Type Approval and more.

WATTALPS batteries are rated IP67 / IP69K / IPB2X for exceptional resistance to environmental factors such as dust, water, immersion.

The WATTALPS BMS ensures that each lithium-ion cell in a battery pack operates within its designated safe operating range – defined by specific voltage, temperature, and current parameters.

For all lithium-ion batteries, deviating from these limits can lead to dangerous conditions, including fires or, in certain circumstances, explosions. Therefore, our BMS detects potential issues early, informs the system of any discrepancies and prevents any safety issue.

The WATTALPS BMS has been specifically developed to answer the critical demands of highly demanding applications.

The WATTALPS Battery Safety Management System (BSMS) is designed as a separate part from the other BMS functions. This ensures that safety is constantly monitored independently from other BMS functions, so that the functioning of the BSMS can never be altered by other functions of the BMS.

WATTALPS Battery Safety Management System has been developed according to the highly demanding standard ISO 26262 dedicated to automotive electronic functional safety.

All core electronic components used in the safety functions are compatible with the highest automotive safety level (ASIL D).

WATTALPS batteries are certified for functional safety under IEC62619 and ISO26262 ASIL B/C standards, thanks to our own internally designed BMS.
